Term: Fall, Spring

Description: This program examines these crucial issues, nation-building, globalization, and decolonizing the mind, from the perspectives of the new democracies of southern Africa. Namibia won its independence in 1990 after decades of apartheid under South African colonization. South Africa had its first democratic election in 1994. As these nations struggle to build nationhood and deal with the legacies of apartheid and colonialism, they are faced with the challenges posed by today's world: rapid globalization and under and unequal development. Decolonizing the mind is a long-term project.

Highlights: Beginning and ending with seminars in South Africa, this program is based in Windhoek, Namibia, with regional travel within Namibia, and includes homestays with Namibian and South African families, and internship opportunities.
