Recently visited by US President Obama (07-2009), Ghana has been heralded as as a shining example of sub-Saharan African democracy and development. It is a culturally vibrant country with much to offer. However there are still many millions living below the poverty line, and the country is greatly dependent upon international aid. This project is aimed to give you an inside experience at the working of a grassroots Non-Government Organisation (NGO). You will observe and participate in the daily tasks gaining valuable insight and experience for furthering your career in the development sector. This project involves working in a city recycling program closely involving the local community. The NGO in question collects discarded plastic drinks sachets that litter the environment, and after cleaning and sterilizing them they stitch them into bags that are exported to other countries as well as sold locally.
Highlights:
You will participate in all stages of the process from the gathering of raw materials to the manufacturing and retailing of the finished product. There will also be the opportunity to be involved with educating people about environmental awareness and encouraging them to dispose of their rubbish responsibly. You can get involved directly with working with the recycling programme which will mean you will work alongside the local community collecting the discarded plastic drinks sachets that litter the environment. You help manage and run the cleaning and sterilizing process, assisting also with stitching of the sachets into bags. You could get involved in the marketing process, if that is something of interest to you. You can get involved with educating local people about environmental awareness and encouraging them to dispose of their rubbish responsibly. Therefore, you can experience first hand all stages of the NGO's activities; from the gathering of raw materials to the manufacturing and retailing of the finished product. This is a very flexible and all-encompassing placement. The NGO also needs volunteers who have an interest in journalism and photography that will be willing to assist in an ongoing documentary blog that would cover the activities of the NGO and the workers on a daily basis.You can get involved with educating local people about environmental awareness and encouraging them to dispose of their rubbish responsibly. So you can choose which aspects of the project you want to get involved with, You will be kept busy, the owner of the NGO is a British guy who is very passionate about what he does. Qualifications:
* Min age 18 * Able to work in hot climate * Reasonable physical fitness * Motivation to work on environmental issues, journalism and/or to gain NGO management experience * Good Spoken English * Full travel & medical insurance * Necessary vaccinations * Necessary flights & visas

Cost in US$: 975
Cost Include Description:
975 (GBP 600) for the first month, GBP 250 for each additional month. Includes airport pickup & dropoff, food and accommodation with a host family.
