Description:
The Work and Study Program is available for the period of a minimum 32 weeks to a maximum of 48 weeks The type of co-op placement positions offered is based on the duration of the co-op placement, English communication skills and related work experience. The longer the placement term is, the more opportunities there are available. Examples of positions: coffee shop clerk, food and beverage server, room attendant (housekeeper), customer service clerk, kitchen help, cashier, retail sales clerk, grocery shop assistant. What kind of placement is offered? The paid co-op placement is available either in the city or at resorts. Positions we arrange for interviews will be at restaurants, coffee shops, supermarkets, retail stores, delis or other related services within the hospitality industry. Students who are more experienced in customer service will have a wider range of positions to choose from. Students should understand that this is not a professional internship program, thus previous education and career plans for the future can be different from the positions offered. What do I get paid? The approximate minimum wage in Canada is 9.00 per hour depending on the province and industry. In some cases, based on the experience, a student will be paid a few dollars more than the stated minimum wage.
Highlights:
When is the start date of the program? The study program can be started on every Mondays except on Canadian national holidays. City placements are available all year round, but we recommend that students avoid the winter season (between November and March) as the service/hospitality employment drops drastically during the winter season. For the summer resort placement, we need to arrange positions during the months of February and March; therefore, we suggest starting the study program from November to March. By the time you finish the study component and approach your placement time, the industry becomes active.
Qualifications:
Study in Toronto or Vancouver + Work Placement across Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta Who is this program for? International students who are interested in studying English in Canada and want to practice their English skills while gaining a work experience in the service, restaurant or hospitality industry are eligible to apply for this program. Students need to be available for a minimum of 32 weeks to study and work. The objective of this program is to learn English and practice English in the workplace. This is an academic program with a co-op component designed as an integral part of completing a language study in Canada. How do I register for the program? WISH will conduct a phone interview as soon as we receive the student's application and a passport copy. Interviews are done by a Registrar or the Internship Placement Advisors at WISH. The phone interview assists the Registrar and the Advisors in verifying the student's level of English and understanding the student's objectives and expectations. Acceptance will be made according to the interview. A payment will be required to receive an official letter of acceptance for the program and to receive the placement services.
