From tropical beaches to spectacular scenery, from rich cultures to unparalleled wildlife - Kenya has everything in abundance. In this beautiful country, you can meet the traditional Maasai on their ancestral lands, spot the incredible wildlife, admire the stunning valley, and explore beautiful villages and cultures. SIYM International internship program in Kenya is located in Mombasa and Nairobi, two vibrant cities of Kenya. In the SI internship program, interns serve the local communities - sharing their experience and compassion with orphan children and local youths while exploring a great African country while participating in an enriching intern abroad experience.

Kenya's internship programs are highly organized and respected, offering benefits beyond just professional development. An internship in Kenya presents a wonderful opportunity to be immersed within an amazing culture while simultaneously working in your area of interest. The internship experience in Kenya supplies a number of hands-on experiences while also offering glimpses into the issues affecting developing countries. This international internship is a unique opportunity to truly witness a country's culture, natural beauty and people - all which cannot often be experienced through simple travel.

Orientation, Language and Cultural Immersion:

In Kenya, SI offers 2 days of cultural orientation in Mombasa and Nairobi. However, you can choose to take the orientation or go directly into an internship project. If you decide to participate in 2 days cultural immersion, your program begins within 2 days of cultural immersion/orientation, Hot and humid Mombasa is the second largest city though oldest, while Nairobi is the modern capital city of Kenya, a.k.a. the "Green City in the Sun."

Work in Internship Projects (1-24 weeks)

This is the heart of your internship in Kenya. Presently, SI collaborates with various esteemed organizations working in the areas of education, medical/health care, women's and children's issues and rural development - to offer meaningful internships for eager, industrious individuals. All internship projects and associated organizations are well-established, reputed and have a successful history of hosting a number of international interns/volunteers.

Kenya Internship Program Free Time

Interns have free time during the evening and weekends. While SI does not cover any activities outside of those involved with the service projects, there are still a number of interesting sites to discover throughout Kenya. Free time is an opportunity for self-discovery and learning. However, SI local coordinators can provide useful assistance and information regarding booking various travel arrangements within this wonderfully enigmatic country. Please make sure to let your program director/supervisor know about your travel plans to ensure your own safety and thorough enjoyment/adventure.

Internship Project and Role of Supervisor

One of the most distinguished features of SI Volunteers/internships in Kenya is the guidance of supervisors. Whichever projects you choose, SI will assign a qualified supervisor to provide assistance for all volunteers/interns throughout the duration of their chosen internship. Individuals filling the role of supervisor are usually either the director or chosen staff member of the project which interns choose. During your time as an international intern/volunteers, you will be assigned a number of duties which also perform (in this sense, there are very few differences between SI and volunteers/interns). Wherein exists the differences between interning and volunteering is that the internship allows individuals to become more deeply involved in their chosen project (i.e. individuals interning in the women's issues projects can further explore issues such as the trafficking of women, domestic violence, skills-development, human rights, etc.).

In the internship, you will select a particular area of your interest related to medical/healthcare issues and explore the issue further with the help of your assigned supervisor. Please note: the project supervisor DOES NOT develop internships as this is up to the intern to get as much or as little out of their projects. ALL participants should be proactive to ensure the ultimate success of their internships. Supervisors will provide at least five (5) hours each week to make certain that interns are adequately guided.

* HIV/AIDS Internships

This is an excellent opportunity for interns/volunteers interested in fostering awareness of the disease and studying ways to change attitudes and behavior towards those unfortunate enough to be infected. Interns/volunteers are mainly involved in counseling and education. This project is open to any interns who are willing to share their love, time and compassion with the HIV patients. There are no specific qualifications required to intern in this project. However, interns/volunteers must possess love and willingness to share time and compassion with the people with great patience and high flexibility.

* Teaching Internships

If you enjoy teaching and work great with children, this is the perfect internship/volunteers for you. This is a very good opportunity for interns/volunteers with an educational background to learn the basic fundamentals of teaching a class and gain some experience in their desired profession. Though no teaching experience or skill is needed, interns/volunteers joining the teaching program should have good English, both written and verbal. Interns/volunteers are expected to be flexible and patient. You should have passion and love for teaching, English and conversation.

* Medical/Healthcare Project

If you are looking for valuable hands-on medical experience, this internship is a great opportunity. There are many health issues to be explored and there is an obvious lack of manpower and resources in the local hospitals located in the outer city. As a medical intern, you will study these rural health posts and community clinics. Participants spend the majority of their internship learning as an assistant to an already-existing doctor/healthcare professional. Work responsibilities vary with your education, skills and previous experience.

Skills/Qualifications

Interns interested in joining the internship/volunteers healthcare/medical program must not possess health care certification, such as an ID as a medical student, EMT or paramedic certification, or nursing or physician's credentials. Though we require a copy of your resume, clearly stating credentials and education, before your arrival to the project.

Intern's responsibilities:

Job responsibilities of interns joining a medical internship in Kenya vary with education, skills, experience, and qualifications. Interns are not allowed to perform diagnoses or surgical operations. Most of the time, interns help doctor or work as an assistant to doctors. Interns measure blood pressure (BP), temperature, height, weight, as well as assist doctors and the medical staffs in the health centers. Interns may also help in health camps (if any), distribute medication, provide tips to patients pertaining to health, nutrition and sanitation as well as council patients, and possibly participate in the treatment for minor injuries/wounds and/or maintain records of treated.

NGO Internships

This internship is a great opportunity for anyone pursuing an environmental career to learn more about their field. All of the offices can use support for all of the local conservation efforts, so assisting would be a great way to learn and an excellent way to gain experience. Internship tasks include, maintaining trails in the municipal forest, promoting new projects, or assisting in the office. A conservation or environmental focus is the key to being successful in this project. Interns are expected to be reliable, flexible, and patient. However, interns interested in joining the conservation project should be ready for physically demanding work.
