Description: International Volunteers are welcome to volunteer in various educational and development programs in Nepal. Nepal is one of the developing countries in the world with almost one-third of its population living below the poverty line. Majority of the people are involved in the agricultural activities that just provide them the subsistence level of livelihood. Hundreds of people in the rural areas are deprived of health facilities, education and transportation. By means of volunteerism, we aim to bring improvement and positive change in the communities. Your small contribution can bring a tremendous change in the lives of people. Therefore, we invite you to participate in the life-changing experience of volunteering in Nepal, and use your skills, time and energy for the benefits of the community.

I. Teaching in Schools
Activities: Teaching, Playing, organizing creative Activities, cooperating in extra curricular activities.

International Volunteers are welcome to teach English or other subjects (Math, Science, Population & Environment, Art, History & Music etc) of your interest in public or private schools in Nepal. The Nepalese students are excited to learn from you. By joining this program, you can have opportunity to teach Nepalese kids in the original Nepalese setting and make a contribution to the education sector in Nepal. In public schools, the medium of teaching is Nepali language but in private schools it is English. So, it is better to choose public schools if you are interested to teach English language, and private schools if you are interested to teach other subjects in English medium. In addition to these teaching activities, you can arrange your own creative activities for the development of children and assist in those extra curricular activities arranged by the schools. You can impart your knowledge on Child Rights, Human Rights, Health and Hygiene, and environmental sanitation etc to the children and through them to the whole society.

Generally, Nepalese schools operate from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Sunday to Friday. They have about eight lectures daily and students aged 3 to 16 years old. There are subject specialized teachers to teach each subject in the schools. You will have kind assistance from subject specific teachers during your teaching period at the school. You can share your knowledge, teaching methodology and methods of collecting resources with them and teach together.
The Government Holidays are considered to be school holidays in Nepal. Further, the schools are closed during the summer vacation, winter vacation & exam preparation time. During the vacation, Nepal volunteers Council offers you alternative activities such as learning Nepali language, culture & tradition, and visiting places of interest.

II. Teaching in Monastery
Activities: Teaching, organizing creative Activities for the Monks/Nuns

Nepal is the birth place of Gautama Buddha, the Light of Asia. There are hundreds of monasteries that are being occupied by the Nepalese & Tibetan monks. More than 20% of the exiled Tibetan monks are taking shelter in Nepal. It is really difficult for the monks to be well educated here. They desire to learn English language and the incidence happening in the outer world, but they are not getting proper chance. Your small contribution can bring a big change in the lives of the monks. You can teach them English language; share your knowledge on first aid, environmental cleanliness, health & hygiene, Human Rights etc. You can learn & experience Buddhist philosophy, and Buddhist way of life from the monks. In the monasteries, the monks strictly follow the Buddhist philosophy in their daily lives. So, it may be totally different from your daily routines. By joining this program, you can experience strictly followed way of life of monks in the monasteries. You can either live with the monks in the Monasteries or in the host family while teaching in the Monasteries.

III. Teaching in Orphanage
Activities: Teaching, Playing, organizing creative Activities, organizing educational tours for the orphans etc.

Each year hundreds of children are being helpless in Nepal. Some of them have already lost their parents/guardians. Some others are losing due to lack of healthcare, medicines, food, natural disasters etc. Some children leave their village in search of jobs in the cities like Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara etc. It is a distressing fact that most of these children are in the street, they have made street their home, they work in the street, eat in the street & sleep in the street. Some of the children under 14 years are working as child labors in hotels, restaurants and houses. They are little paid and exploited a lot. They feel themselves alone, abandoned & unfortunate. Some other children are being taken by orphanages and cared for. But they are not well furnished. Children there do not have proper care, meal, clothing and education. Still, in comparison to their other counterparts, they feel that they have got something more. We place you in one of these orphanages to teach them. You can teach them English language or other subjects of your interest that are useful to them.

At present, Nepal Volunteers Council (NVC) does not have its own orphanage, we are assisting other orphanages. NVC aims to fight against Child labor and rehabilitate them making them free from labor, and educate all the street children & bring them back to the society and the main stream of development. For this purpose, NVC plans to establish an orphanage in the near future. We expect your kind assistance in the mission and cordially invite you to assist as much as you can.

IV. Teacher Development
Activities: Teacher Training, Organizing creative Activities for the development of teachers

The Teacher Development program is an exciting program for you to participate. In this program, you impart your ideas & experience on teaching methodology to the Nepalese teachers. You will share your knowledge on how to teach effectively, how to motivate students in study, how to discipline them etc. We think that it is necessary to use modern techniques of educating them rather than the traditional ones.

You will be placed in the public or private school for the teacher development program. You can train them in Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Pokhara or other various locations in Nepal. To participate in this program, you should have sound knowledge & experience on teaching.

V. Agriculture & Environment
Activities: Actively observing & involving in the Agricultural works, sharing techniques of modern agriculture, keeping clean environment and environment protection

More than 70% of the people in Nepal are involved in Agricultural works where only 21% of the total territory is arable. But, due to high population pressure on land, people are cultivating even the marginal land. The forests and open spaces are being converted into Agricultural farms. Due to this there is a great threat to the wild animals and birds on the one hand. On the other hand, people are suffering from natural disasters like flood, landslide, and soil erosion. The environmental status is being degraded. The farmers are using more insecticides, pesticides and chemical fertilizers to boost the production but in contrary it is decreasing the fertility of land and making the environment polluted. It is distressing fact that due to climate change, rain does not occur in time and thus reduces the agricultural productivity since most of the agricultural cultivation here depends on monsoon rain.

By joining this program, you can observe the farmers working manually on their farms and join them. You can teach them modern ways of cultivating for higher production, and how to use insecticides & chemical fertilizers or not to use them. You can play a role in uplifting the life standard of the farmers and in the process of moving towards commercial level of agricultural from the subsistence level.

VI. Health & Medical
Activities: Creating Public Awareness related to health & hygiene, environmental sanitation, listening & counseling to peoples health problems, checking patients and distributing medicines.

Nepal Volunteers Council mobilizes health workers in the rural areas of Nepal where the people are deprived of health and medical facilities. The people in the rural communities are unwilling to go to health posts or hospitals to consult a doctor when they get sick. Instead, they go to the witch doctors due to the existing culture and tradition. On the other hand, due to lack of nutritious food, the people there are suffering from different diseases. So, there is a great need of mobilization of health workers.

We place you in the health posts or hospitals in rural or urban areas as per your choice. You will work closely with the Nepalese doctors and nurses in checking patients and medicine distributing process. We can place you in the pre- arranged Health Camps managed by the Government or the community people. You will have an opportunity to help the poor community and learn about their lives.

VII. Women Empowerment
Activities: Actively observing the conditions of Nepalese women in the village, giving them income generative skill-oriented training to improve their life standard, to encourage them to be independent, share your experience as far as possible, teach English to young women etc.

Nepal Volunteers Council aims to empower women of the back warded and the marginalized communities in Nepal. Most of the women living in the village are deprived of education and training, and thus are found to be doing manual work for more than 16 hours a day. Still, they are dependent on their males in all the financial, economic issues. There is a great degree of inequality between man and women. The women are not getting their rights as they are treated as the second group. In this situation, we aim to bring equality, improvement and independence to the lives of women through education and skill orientated income generative training.
