Description:
In 2005, the Bangkok Post reported that Cambodia had the worst English language skills in Southeast Asia. Due to a shortage of qualified teachers, the lack of a steady English curriculum and insufficient resources, Cambodian children are rarely given the opportunity to learn English. GSC participants will work with orphanages and other local organizations that serve as resources for Cambodian youth to participate in extracurricular activities, which includes English education. No prior teaching experience is required and all participants will receive an English Training Manual prior to departure.
Highlights:
Once in-country, the GSC Cambodian staff will provide participants with additional training on what to expect in the classroom, suggested activities and games, as well as classroom management techniques. In addition, volunteers will have the chance to visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, and the Killing Fields at Cheoung Ek. During one of the weekends, participants will go on a three-day visit to Angkor Wat, or a two-day trip to visit the local sites around Phnom Penh.
