Term: Throughout the year
Dates: Throughout the year.

Description:
Our internship program in Peru provides currently enrolled university students, recent graduates, and professionals the chance to better understand their field of study while gaining valuable work experience that will distinguish their resumes. Additionally, we offer participants of this program the chance to learn more about the life and culture of Peru from an intimate perspective.

AIDE believes that cultural exchange develops tolerance and understanding of circumstances and societies that are different from our own. Our aim is to build a worldwide community of global citizens who will be part of an ongoing intercultural conversation. Welcome aboard, and we hope that you enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Highlights:
Accommodation
During their volunteer projects, participants will live with an Peruvian family either by themselves or with a small group of other volunteers in their city. Participants will be provided with 2-3 meals per day. Even though some host families may be able to launder participants' clothes, participants should plan to spend around 3.50 USD per week on laundry.

** A handful of volunteer projects offer on-site living instead of home-stay accommodations.

Internship placement
We have internship placements throughout Peru. Below is a brief sample of the kinds of placements we offer. If participants are interested in working in an area they don't see below, they are welcome to consult with an AIDE coordinator. We do our best to accommodate all requests.

Health and Medicine
Preference will be given to participants that have some experience in a medical environment or relevant coursework.

* Clinical Medicine

Location: Cusco

Description of project and duties:
Participants with previous medical experience or relevant course studies are eligible to be placed in one of the larger hospitals in the Cusco area. This hospital is equipped with modern facilities and has doctors with many specializations. Interns can work in a variety of different departments.

* Rural Health Care

Location: Cusco

Description of project and duties:
The internship is located in a small clinic in the Sacred Valley, near Cusco. The clinic has two operating rooms, four consultation rooms, dental and gynecological care, a lab, pharmacy, and a birthing center. Interns will work alongside the doctors and nurses as they care for the patients. Since it is a small clinic, interns will be exposed to many different sides of medicine.

* Clinical Medicine

Location: Lima

Description of project and duties:
The main responsibility of the health center is to provide medical assistance to all community members, regardless of socioeconomic conditions. The clinic has a laboratory, pharmacy, gynecologist, newborn nursery, dental care, and an emergency room for minor surgeries and childbirth. Interns will assist the doctors and nurses as well as provide primary health care information directly to patients and families.

* Physical Therapy/Rehabilitation

Location: Lima

Description of project and duties:
The physical therapy center is dedicated to the rehabilitation of children who have cerebral palsy, autism, Down Syndrome, and other physical and mental disabilities. Interns will assist the staff with the children's physical therapy. There are opportunities to work with the center's psychologist or in the small special education school. The center also has an area dedicated to the rehabilitation of adults.
