South Africa
- Cape Town:
Cape Town (Kaapstad)
Term: Throughout the year
Dates: Year Round
Description:
This organization was founded in 1991 in Khayelitsha, Cape Town in South Africa. Started by a former Olympic athlete, it was a response to the critical situation faced by youth in impoverished townships in the country. Their mission has remained the same: to set up sustainable sports and recreation activities for disadvantaged children and youth, and to use sport as a medium to teach life skills, empower people and build community. They recruit international and local volunteers to teach physical education, coach sport and train instructors in underprivileged communities. Their objectives are to provide new sports opportunities, train trainers, develop sports partnerships, promote friendship and fair play, give children a chance to play and learn and promote voluntarism and develop role models. Their volunteers achieve these objectives through implementing a variety of programmes. The organization forges partnerships with federations to assist them in implementing programs and to extend their capacity. They work with national and international federations, and cooperate with the other national and provincial sports structures in South Africa, including government departments, the National Olympic Committee of South Africa, and the South African Sports Commission. Sharing resources and extending networks builds links that underpin sustainable activities. They also forge partnerships with other organizations active in community development, using sport as a vehicle to pass on messages relevant to other areas of community life, for example: AIDS/HIV awareness and children's rights. The organization is offering internships in marketing and communications to be based in the head office in Cape Town city centre. As an intern, you will be accountable to the manager, which will involve reporting back regularly, completing tasks timeously, maintaining a positive company image and arriving at work and meetings punctually and well prepared. As far as administration is concerned, you will be responsible for reporting back at internal strategic planning meetings and maintaining an awareness of keeping costs down. As an intern, interpersonal effectiveness is of high importance, and you will be required to incorporate the use of initiative as well as the quality, accuracy and timeousness of work. This internship will provide you with ample opportunity to use your existing skills as well as develop new foundations and gain new experiences.
