Description:
Challenging and high-powered internship in professional, award-winning web design/development firm in Ghana. This is an internship where your IT skills are put to heavy use and offfer an incredible addition to your CV/resume as well your personal and professional growth. Enjoy the Ghanaian laid-back culture, create your own hours while utlizing the chance to exercise your creativity and technology passion to get the job done! PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Work alongside professional web designers in the largest web design and development firm in Ghana. Observe experts and learn how they work in an African culture and environment. The experience you gain will be invaluable to you in the future and totally different to what you're used to in your home country. This company specializes in interactive media development, applications development and E-business development. Focused on both multimedia and server side technology, this company has created a number of award winning sites and helped advance the state of Web Africa. This placement is tailored for people with a passion for web design and will enable you to utilise your programming skills or/and graphic skills with one of the most dynamic multi-media firms in West Africa. In CS, they utilise two types of skills, programmers and graphic designers. If you find that you are using a package that is unfamiliar, you will be given the opportunity to learn the software before commencing work on a project. During your project, you could find yourself using a number of different tools and environments. All your work is very team-orientated, thus it is important that you can work within a team, as well as being able to work on your own initiative. If you have a passion for multimedia and apply yourself well, you'll have a great placement experience! You get real responsibility on projects once you're familiar with the software/hardware/programming languages that CS uses. Though you're not just thrown into the deep end, Robin (my manager) is always willing to help out with any problems. Since this placement is in Ghana, the atmosphere at CS is very laid back. I love it! The work colleagues in the office are all very friendly too. You're free to work almost whatever hours you like. Working hours are loosely based around 9am 5pm weekdays, though, they really are flexible. So you can work longer/shorter days, weekends or evenings if you like. As long as you get the work done it's fine! WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT: --> An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into Africa and Ghanaian culture. --> You'll learn a lot from experts in your field about how they work in a culture that is very different to what you're used to. --> New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development. --> An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market --> And best of all ... an unforgettable experience! WHAT OUR USERS SAY: "I've been made project manager on this project; I have a great deal more responsibility than I feel I would get back in the UK doing similar work." OTHER PROJECTS AVAILABLE IN GHANA: You can also do Teaching Sports, Work Experience or Internships, Care with a Street Girls Aid Project, or take part in the Annual Travellers Summer Fun Camp for the children in the holidays. You can also combine any two or three of these projects to give you an even wider and more diverse experience of your time in Ghana. "Walking to Sambel is probably one of the most amazing things ever! You walk up from the house on Mosuku Road and people from everywhere are shouting out "Obruni" but you just give them a smile, ask them how they are and they feel respected. I mean, at home, people wouldn't give you a second look but you don't mind the curiosity of the kids, who come rushing to your feet and grab at your arms and just continuously tug or pinch your skin... you truly feel as though you are doing something fantastic for the kids we have taught." It is as easy as that! LOCATION: Accra, on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, is both big-city hectic and African laid-back. Accra may not be one of the prettiest cities by Western standards, but there is something else this African city has that makes up for lack of planning and fancy buildings. It is a wonderful city to experience. It is full of character, has a warm feel, is extremely friendly and feels very safe. It also has some great beaches! Spend a few hours in the breezy capital of Accra and you'll swear the wind and waves off the Gulf of Guinea have infused the land and people with equatorial warmth. It is a city that is young, wild and full of soul and here you'll sample the true African spirit. During the day, the streets are full of market stalls and vendors where you can browse and buy mouthwatering foods, colourful Kente cloth, beads, or baskets. Don't forget to practice your haggling. During the night the city comes alive with the traditional Ghanaian 'spot' bars and the sound of live drumming music in the warm night air. Village-specific festivals and events occur throughout the year. Accra itself is fascinating, very different from home. Very noisy, dusty and hot, but really colourful and vibrant. Particularly impressed by the palm trees, amazing variety of little stalls and shops and the women balancing huge bundles on their heads! We've felt very safe so far - very little hassle from people, most of whom have been really welcoming. Caroline Allen Law Placement Jan 2004 ACCOMMODATION: Your accommodation will vary depending on where you're located. You may live in comfortable guest house accommodation, but you will most likely live with a host family. This means that you get to eat, sleep, work, socialise and generally live like a Ghanaian. Local family stays enable you to fully experience the local culture from the inside and most of our volunteers make lifelong friends of "their" families! Travellers' placements are very flexible and you can combine this project with any other Travellers project, either in the same country or in different countries.
Qualifications:
A CV/Resume is needed to determine your level of web/IT experience and duties at the web design company will then be determined. All the projects with Travellers Worldwide require a large dose of enthusiasm as well!
