Description: Want to be the voice, or behind the scenes, of a prominent news and entertainment radio station in the heart of Ghana's capital? Work at a versatile radio broadcasting and production internship. Create and research stories of your interest and gain a deep knowledge of radio station management/duties as well as intense knowledge of the country's day to day cultural news through this project.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Be prepared for a lot of work, the station is very fast-paced by African standards. Because the radio station has a small team with such a large reputation, you'll find yourself working many hours in a dynamic environment during your placement. For people who have a passion for radio this is definitely the placement to give you great experience.

The station works on news and entertainment. If you have past radio experience, then it is likely you will have plenty of freedom to express ideas and create your own work assignments. You could find yourself involved with preparing news stories and researching and editing features.

In production and broadcasting there is also the opportunity to do initial reporting, writing, voice-overs, and depending on your past experience and how you demonstrate yourself, you could also be broadcasting the final story.

After detailed discussion with you to ascertain what you're looking for, we try to tailor your Work Experience placement to suit your specific requirements, to ensure you gain the maximum benefit and experience from the placement.

HIGHLIGHTS:
AKWAABA! Welcome to Ghana. This country is unique and rich in African culture that is all their own. Their very distinctive and colourful Kente cloth is famous around the world and their food is an experience - you absolutely must eat lunch in the street bought from a kiosk or food cart.

Ghanaian time is equally famous. When someone says, "See you at 10.a.m.," - what he really means is, "I'll see you sometime tomorrow"! And then he may not turn up at all. The pace of life is slower and more relaxed. You'll quickly get involved in the daily life of the local people and pretty soon you'll feel completely at home - Ghana has that effect on you!

LOCATION:
Accra, on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea, is both big-city hectic and African laid-back. Accra may not be one of the prettiest cities by Western standards, but there is something else this African city has that makes up for lack of planning and fancy buildings. It is a wonderful city to experience. It is full of character, has a warm feel, is extremely friendly and feels very safe. It also has some great beaches!

Spend a few hours in the breezy capital of Accra and you'll swear the wind and waves off the Gulf of Guinea have infused the land and people with equatorial warmth. It is a city that is young, wild and full of soul and here you'll sample the true African spirit. During the day, the streets are full of market stalls and vendors where you can browse and buy mouthwatering foods, colourful Kente cloth, beads, or baskets. Don't forget to practice your haggling.

During the night the city comes alive with the traditional Ghanaian 'spot' bars and the sound of live drumming music in the warm night air. Village-specific festivals and events occur throughout the year.

ACCOMMODATION:
Your accommodation will vary depending on where you're located. You may live in comfortable guest house accommodation, but you will most likely live with a host family. This means that you get to eat, sleep, work, socialise and generally live like a Ghanaian. Local family stays enable you to fully experience the local culture from the inside and most of our volunteers make lifelong friends of "their" families!

Travellers' placements are very flexible and you can combine this project with any other Travellers project, either in the same country or in different countries.

Cost in US$: Depends on length of stay. Start at 1,945 USD

You'll be met at the nearest airport on your arrival by our in-country manager who will take you to your accommodation and give you a full induction into the area. He/she will also be on call 24/7 and you'll see them frequently.

Pre-departure you'll receive comprehensive information about every aspect of your placement and necessary preparations, ranging from what to pack, to visa information, to what to do on your weekend travel in the country. Your safety, well being and happiness throughout your placement are our primary concerns and we will keep in touch with you throughout. International flights not included.

Typical Volunteer: These placements would suit people who want to improve their knowledge and skills in their field, learn about a new culture, boost their resume to kick-start their career, and who also want to have a structured placement at the same time as having an exciting travel experience. Patience, adaptability and initiave definitely an advantage. No qualifications needed, but previous experience will enable you to do more in-depth and complex activities.
