Description:
Isla offers a unique opportunity to live, learn, and serve in Ghana with a local host organization. Immerse yourself in a short term volunteer project (2-8 weeks) or an internship (9-52 weeks) in a rich cultural, service learning experience that combines cross-cultural and sustainable community development training with a hands-on service project. Isla seeks individuals with an interest and experience in youth development and education as well as health and nutrition education to work in such areas as teaching; basic health and hygiene; malaria prevention; AIDS/HIV education; environmental education, health and water sanitation. Additional possibilities include work setting up a youth camp, help with record keeping, feeding orphans and vulnerable children, working with partners at the local childrens hospital, center for street children. and local orphanages. Typically, participants will be involved in sustainable community development, teaching and training others, surveying local needs, planning projects as well as gaining valuable hands on experience all in the realm of youth development and education. The Isla Ghana program will be one step in the realization to Project Okurases goals to develop: · A family-based model of caring for HIV/AIDS orphans and vulnerable children. · A model for job and skills training for youth, young adults, and women in the arts and building industry. · A model for family and village-based formal education with special emphasis on female children.

Qualifications:
Isla applicants should be 18 or older who have some education or experience in youth development, education, health, and nutrition. It is most important to be highly motivated and enthusiastic because the work can be quite demanding. Qualities required: individuals who are adventurous, able to adapt quickly to a foreign environment, have the ability to take initiative, who are flexible and open-minded, service-oriented and who possess good communication skills, and a desire to have fun by serving and learning from new communities through cross-cultural exchange. Cost Include Description:
Program fees include all program costs (excluding airfare). Program costs include your placement, pre-departure web-based training in sustainable community development, in-country cross-cultural orientation and materials, basic language training, room and board, mid-service development workshops and reflection group sessions, final debriefing and evaluation, medical and emergency evacuation insurance, safety and security, in-country ground transportation from the airport to the training site, and experienced Isla staff. (Program fees by location) What is not included Domestic and international airfare and airport taxes, the cost of your passport, visas, and immunizations, and laundry service. *This program is economical!
