Hospital Placements (Medical and Non-medical)

  Ghana
  • Accra:
  • Accra

Term: Throughout the year
Durations of Program: 5-8 weeks, 9-12 weeks and 3-6 months
Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Dates: Ongoing

Description: 2 - 3 placements are currently available for students looking to gain experience in a hospital setting in Ghana, West Africa. Successful applicants will have the chance to work closely with a local government-run hospital in Akim Oda (Eastern Region) or Asamankese (Eastern Region).

Volunteers can expect some flexibility regarding which department they will be assigned and may even have the opportunity to rotate through the hospital departments throughout their stay to get a better sense of how the system works. Decisions regarding which department you will be placed with are made by management at your chosen hospital and will take in to consideration your interests, qualifications and the needs of the particular hospital.

In the past volunteers have assisted in the records department (filling forms, training staff in the use of computer records keeping), with the pharmacy (assisting pharmacists and technicians, completing paperwork, assisting customers) and with the public health department (working as part of a rural outreach team in the areas of child health, sanitation and sexual health).

Applicants with medical experience and/or education will be considered for positions that involve directly assisting physicians and nurses.

Both of the available hospitals are exceptionally busy and have a medical laboratory and pharmacy on site. Asamankese is a smaller, more rural community. Akim Oda has a larger range of modern amenities and has a larger population.

Medical internships are available year-round and for varying lengths of time. Ideally, internships last between 2 - 4 months although we are able to offer placements anywhere from 3 weeks to 8 months in length.

Qualifications: The following qualifications are preferred:

* Some university education (For positions involving direct assistance to nurses and doctors medical education or experience is required)
* Possess exceptional communication skills (at times it can be difficult to adapt to different accents used by colleagues and patients in the hospital setting)
* Be understanding, open-minded and respectful of different cultural practices
* Able to adapt quickly to new situations
* Comfortable working with diverse clients
* Patient and friendly personality is a serious asset
