Purpose: To conduct a scientific research project on amaranth's ability to help children overcome malnutrition. Location: Rural communities surrounding Oaxaca City, Oaxaca. Time Commitment: As long as needed to conduct research Level of Spanish needed: Advanced Level of English needed: Advanced Responsibilities: This intern will conduct a scientific study in which malnourished children consume amaranth daily and their weights are charted to see with what success they overcome malnutrition. The intern will interview participants and non-participants in order to gain a better understanding of amaranth's role in helping children overcome malnutrition. S/he will maintain an open dialogue with participants as to the health of their children, as this could affect the ability to overcome malnutrition. The study will be developed so as to obtain the most reliable results possible. If possible, after the study is over, the intern may be asked to evaluate Puente's programs based on results.

An internship with Puente a la Salud Comunitaria offers an opportunity to experience the promotion of amaranth, a grain native to Mexico, uniquely suited to face some of Southern Mexico's greatest health risks. Through the community visits, the intern experiences first-had the diversity of the Oaxacan countryside, as well as the impact of a grassroots public health approach.

Salary / Pay: The internship is unpaid; however, occasionally a small stipend might be included. All internships require a minimum commitment of two months except under special circumstances. Most internships are designed for those with a graduate level education or people with at least two years of paid experience in a similar position.
