Description: New Zealand is an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean consisting of the North Island and the South Island. With a population of 4,150,000 inhabitants on a land mass of 270,534 km² (about the size of Italy), it is one of the world's least occupied countries and because of this it has been able to conserve its famous natural beauty (which is why this is the only country where we offer internship placements in the field of Nature conservation).

Three quarters of the population live on the younger volcanic North Island, where the capital Wellington and the largest city Auckland are situated. Christchurch is the biggest city of the mountainous South Island which is known for its rough but magnificent scenery. Throughout the country the climate is mild and temperate, mainly maritime, though the South Island is generally a bit cooler.

New Zealand is heavily dependent on trade, particularly in agricultural products, as fruit and vegetable growing has been and continues to be the main export industry in New Zealand as well as farming (especially the well-known sheep farming).

The Kiwi's reputation as one of the world's most friendly and hospitable nations combined with their unique and dynamic culture influenced by European (Pakeha), Maori, Pacific and Asian culture makes the other Down Under a country visitors don't like to leave in a hurry.

The indigenous Maori, who call their Island Aotearoa - The Land of the Long White Cloud, and constitute about 14% of the population, introduced a whole new division of tradition-based art such as bone or green-stone carving, weaving etc. and the kapa haka (song and dance), which are already basic elements of New Zealand's uniqueness.

* Flora and Fauna
Due to its geographic isolation, situated about 2000 km southeast of Australia across the Tasman Sea, New Zealand developed an extraordinary flora and fauna: enormous mountain ranges, steamy volcanoes, a never-ending coastline (no place in New Zealand is more than 128 km from the sea), gorgeous fjords and opulent rainforests are home to unique flightless bird species like the Kiwis, which are together with the silver fern and the pohutukawa tree the national emblems of New Zealand.

Therefore tourism also plays a significant role in New Zealand's economy and its scenic beauty has led people to invent nicknames like the clean, green adventure playground referring to the various outdoor activities like bungee-jumping, hiking, mountaineering etc. Wold famous destinations such as Aoraki/Mount Cook or the Franz-Josef-Glacier, which is where rainforest meets glacier, and lots of huge national parks like Whanganui-National Park or Tongariro-National Park are places one could spend a lifetime.
