Description: The International Summer School at Newcastle University offers a choice of three-week academic programmes or a ten week internship programme.

Internship Programme
This ten week programme is for students looking to work and study abroad. For the first seven weeks students are placed in a host company in the Newcastle area and for the final three weeks students join one of the academic programmes on the International Summer School - Doing Business in Europe, Media & Journalism, Archaeology, Culture & Heritage, Creative Writing, History, International Politics, Architecture: Medieval to Modern.   

Internship placements can be arranged in the following fields:
Business, Administration, Marketing, Journalism and Copy Writing, Event Management, Public Relations, IT Systems, Graphic Design, Music Production and Distribution, Engineering, Theatres, Tourism, Hospitality, Museums, Web Development, Import/Export, Translation and Sales.

Evaluation
During the internship students are required to keep a regular journal in which they reflect on their internship experience and collect evidence of how they have developed and demonstrated their work-related skills. On completion of the internship, students will submit a written portfolio, attend an assessed interview and make a formal presentation in which they analyse and evaluate their skill development and how they made a positive contribution to the organisation hosting their placement. Host companies also provide formal feedback on progress at a mid-point and end of the internship.

Academic Programmes

Students can expect outstanding teaching standards delivered in a warm and welcoming environment. Programmes are designed to be interactive, stimulating and fun. Teaching involves a combination of lectures, classroom learning, self-directed study and practical field trips.

Programmes last three weeks and are made up of 48 hours contact time (lectures, classroom learning and field trips) and 54 hours of self-directed study. All programmes are accredited by Newcastle University. Most institutions allow students to transfer credits to count towards their home degree programmes. However, if you intend to take a Summer School programme for credit, you must check programme acceptability with your home institution before registering.

Preparation and Assessment

Students will be given advance notice of all pre-programme reading material. Depending on individual credit transfer needs, students will be assessed by a combination of on-going and final-stage assessment. At the end of the International Summer School students will be awarded a certificate of attendance, stating the programme studied and their grade.

Practical Field Trips

Over the course of the three weeks students will go on field trips specific to the subject they are studying. For example, Business School students will visit local businesses in the North East of England whilst Creative Writing school students will visit literary sites in the region. However, there will be one field trip each week for all Summer School students irrespective of the subject they have chosen to study. These field trips will encourage cross-disciplinary discussion and dialogue. They will ensure all students learn about the North East of England's world heritage sites, impressive history and unique story of cultural and urban regeneration.
All field trips are part of your academic tuition and as such are not subject to additional charges.

Weekly field trips for all Summer School students include:
* A visit to England's largest world heritage site Hadrian's Wall. Built by the Roman Emperor Hadrian almost 2,000 years ago, students explore the archaeological sites of Housesteads and Vindolanda in the company of a world renowned expert on the wall;
* A coastal castle tour, including a visit to Alnwick Castle, home of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies;
* A visit to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Students explore the striking 16th century Castle and the evocative ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, the famous seat of Christian learning in the 7th century.

Social Programme

As a Summer School student, you will be able to participate in a range of social activities running alongside the academic programmes. All social programme activities are included in the overall price and you can choose to do as many or as few as you like. Social programme activities will take place in the evenings and at weekends.

The social programme kicks off with an Ice Breaker Party at the Hatton Gallery and culminates with a Certificate Awards Party at St James Park, home to Newcastle United Football Club.

Qualifications: The internship programme is aimed at undergraduates or recent graduates from across the world. Basic entry requirements are that you must be over the age of 18 and have a minimum standard of English at IELTS level 6.5 over above (or equivalent).
