Description:
The Animal Care Project in South Africa is very much a hands-on, practical placement for anyone who loves animals and wants to gain experience working with them. There are opportunities in South Africa for those who want to get involved in looking after and caring for animals. Placements are suitable for anyone interested in volunteering abroad, including college students and those taking a gap year or career break. Volunteers are simply required to enjoy looking after animals and want to learn more about them! Volunteers can choose to work in either a general domestic animal center, or a seabird rehabilitation center in Cape Town. Volunteering on an Animal Care Placement in South Africa with Projects Abroad Volunteers shadow the full time animal workers at both centers, gaining first hand experience of the way that animal rescue centers work in South Africa. There is the opportunity to get involved with hands-on work like feeding, exercising and rehabilitating the animals under your care. As with any volunteer placement, you get back what you put in; showing initiative and a willingness to get involved will result in your experience being very rewarding. Our voluntary animal care placement in South Africa will give you access to invaluable work experience which will greatly enhance your résumé. You will gain many practical skills and develop as a person through having to adapt and be resourceful while living and working in a foreign country. Volunteers working with domestic animals work mostly with stray dogs and cats at centers in Cape Town. You'll be involved with preparing food, cleaning out cages, exercising the animals and grooming and caring for neglected and abused animals. The love and attention that you give to the animals can really improve their quality of life. Local staff will also appreciate any help with repairing and maintaining the kennels and cattery. Volunteers with a special interest in the conservation of coastal birds could also chose to work in a bird sanctuary. Based in Bloubergstrand, 25km out of central Cape Town across the bay from Table Mountain, this shelter specializes in rescuing injured African Penguins. Volunteers here work in an amazing location, where colonies of penguins, cormorants, pelicans and even pink flamingos are a common sight. Volunteers will assist in preparing food, feeding the penguins, cleaning out cages, and rehabilitating injured or oiled birds. You'll get the opportunity to learn about these ecosystems and unique animals, while having a great time looking after these amazing animals! Volunteers who choose the coastal birds option will live with host families in Bloubergstrand, (known locally as Table View, for the spectacular view of the mountain). Transportation into the center of Cape Town is fast and frequent.
Highlights:
Living in Cape Town is the perfect base for the huge variety of surrounding attractions. From the infamous Table Mountain with its unique species of plants and animals which forms the dramatic backdrop to the city, world class vineyards and stunning beaches with multiple surf spots, to the mix of trendy establishments at the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town is a great base from which to explore a wide variety of places. Inside the city bowl lives a population with a hugely varied demographic, both in terms of race, religion, language, wealth and interest. Whatever your favorite sport, hobby, taste in music or preferred choice of dinner you'll find it in Cape Town, whose cultural calendar overflows with events to suit every taste. In terms of travel after your placement, South Africa's attractions will spoil you. With mountains in the east and center of South Africa, you could be climbing or skiing one day and on the beaches in Durban the next. South Africa is the home of adventure travel, boasting the highest bungee jump in the world. The Game Reserves where you can view the Big Five are also an essential part of the South African experience. Combine these activities with beautiful beaches and traditional sunsets after a safari and you're in for either a thrilling or a relaxing time; the choice is yours! All accommodation is organized, paid for and monitored by Projects Abroad. All project placements are regularly visited and checked. We require high standards of supervision and accommodation, which are verified before you arrive in South Africa. This project offers the opportunity to become fully immersed in the culture in a manner which even the most hardened of backpackers could never hope to do.

Projects Abroad's Mission Statement: As part of the global economy, Projects Abroad helps create local employment wherever we send volunteers. Employing local staff overseas and using their talents and knowledge is important to us. This local knowledge and support enables the organization to channel the skills of the volunteers from more affluent countries to regions around the world where they are needed. Volunteers also learn from their placements and the people they meet, and they gain experience in a chosen field. In the 21st century, we believe this mutual respect is what cultural exchange is all about.
