Art Gallery Internship Madrid
Spain
Term: Throughout the year
Dates: Commencing every Monday year long
Description:
Through Best Programs two Madrid galleries offer art lovers and business-savvy students alike an insider's peek at the inner-workings of the art world through internships. "I would say most people have a different idea of how the art world functions before they get in here and see it for themselves," said Maria Gomez, the Madrid art curator of exhibitions at one gallery. "It's an eye opener for people to see how hard we work." If you are currently searching for an internship which shows how art galleries are owned and operated these internships and volunteer positions are available. Interns typically work part-time for 3 to 6 months on tasks ranging from installing artwork to speaking with visitors. The unpaid internships provide valuable work and social experiences and introduce students to the professional side of the fine art world in an international setting. "Even though internships are educational, they also produce a product on time," Gomez said. "I think this exhibition is pretty intellectually engaging and challenging." The galleries provide challenge through a broad internship program, said one gallery owner. Interns work on marketing and some advertising design in addition to helping with exhibitions and other gallery tasks, he said. While business majors can learn marketing and sales techniques from the internship, artists will also benefit, gaining a chance to make contacts and begin their career. Gomez clarified "Approaching a gallery (with work) is an art in and of itself. I hope interns take away an understanding of business and the business of art. Our gallery interns will handle large exhibitions such as one we are organizing in the US for 2008. Interns need to be energetic, easy, down-to-earth people to work with. They don't need a special skills or prior experience." The gallery plans to accept two interns for the spring semester, although more may be needed, Gomez said. Interested students should apply at least 8 weeks ahead of time. "You get to meet a lot of people in the art world, work with the public and learn how to speak about art," said Maria del Mar Bermúdez, a University of Madrid senior. "I hope to gain a career in the art world afterwards. My cousin continued interning for four years and now works as assistant curator at a museum. You learn a lot about presenting yourself and professionalism." she added.
