Hospitality Internship Position

  Samoa
    Apia

Term: Throughout the year
Dates: various

Description: Coconuts Beach Club - Resort & Spa, a 22 unit beach resort in Samoa (South Pacific) is pleased to offer a general resort practical training position. The 5- to 6-month long practical training position is very hands-on, and depends heavily on the individual's self-motivation. The participant will be trained briefly in virtually every aspect of our little resort's operation. This will run from restaurant and bar, to front office, to housekeeping, to maintenance. There will be a great deal of guest contact. After an initial training period, the participant will be assigned various roles and projects within the hotel. What a particular trainee ends up doing will depend on a combination of what they are adept at, what they desire to do, and what roles the hotel needs filled. The trainee will be expected to work at least at a supervisory level, and so self-motivation and initiative are essential.

The practical training position is not a paid one. Room, in the form of a small shared apartment on property, and three meals a day are included. Our restaurant is generally considered the best in Samoa, and meals are straight off of the menus with only a few restrictions. There is a shared staff car available for use, and discounted prices are offered in our Gift Shop. Attire is casual, skirts or shorts, tropical weight shirts and rubber slippers being the norm.

The work environment at Coconuts is very casual. Our staff of 70 to 80 employees is a very friendly and fun-loving group, and are all from the nearby villages. There are some cultural and language challenges in working in Samoa. The pace in Samoa is very slow, the work ethic much less established, and the Western social environment very limited. English is a second language for all of the employees, so communication can sometimes be a challenge.

Hospitality Internship Position

Highlights: The job experience offered will provide the participant with a full range of small resort knowledge. Off work, Samoa is truly a rare remaining slice of Paradise. Perhaps the most intact traditional Polynesian culture provides an interesting opportunity to experience a distinctly non-Western way of thinking and lifestyle. The beautiful, pristine environment offers a range of possible activities for ree time, including beach-going, snorkelling, scuba diving, waterfalls to swim under and jungle trails and rivers to hike.

Qualifications: Applicants must be actively enrolled in a University program which allows/requires internship or practical training positions as part of of tthe curriculum. Must have a good command of the English language and a reasonable working knowledge of personal computer use, including applications such as MS Word and Excel. Must be willing and able to work in a culturally unique and socially remote location, and tolerant of a tropical climate. Must be out-going and willing to face new challenges with a smile.
