Description:
Bremen is a Hanseatic city in north-western Germany. It is a port city, situated along the river Weser, about 60 km (37 mi) south from its mouth on the North Sea. Bremen is one of two towns belonging to the state of Bremen (Free Hanseatic City of Bremen), referring to its membership in the medieval Hanseatic League. The population of the city is estimated to be over 550,000 while the metropolitan area of Bremen-Oldenburg has a population of more than 2.37 million. Thus, Bremen is the second most populous city in North Germany and tenth in Germany. Stroll around the city centre and visit the Schnoor-Viertel with its old medieval buildings. If interested in arts visit the Bremer Kunsthalle (museum of art) with one of north Germany's finest collections. If you like football, visit a match of the local team Werder Bremen in the stadium. If you want to see green fields, cows, bikers and in line skaters, visit "Blockland" to enjoy the agricultural side of Bremen's nature. It is located near the river Wuemme, roughly in the west of the university. You can drive (by bike or skates) along the dike and take an ice-cream at one of the farms (some also sell organic food). In winter there is no ice-cream but the river and small creeks for ice-skating. The Marktplatz (Market square) is dominated by the opulent facade of the Town Hall. The building was erected between 1405 and 1410 in Gothic style, but the facade was built two centuries later (1609-12), in Renaissance style. In front of the Town Hall stand two famous statues: one is the statue (1404) of the city's protector, Roland, bearing the "sword of justice" and a shield decorated with an imperial eagle. The other is Gerhard Marcks's famous 1953 bronze sculpture Die Stadtmusikanten (Town Musicians) which portrays the donkey, dog, cat, and rooster of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale.
Highlights:
Several high-tech industries have settled in the city. Many of Germany's space technology exports are manufactured in facilities in Bremen, such as the Columbus module of the International Space Station, Europe's Ariane 5 rocket upper stages and the Automated Transfer Vehicle. Bremen also had a huge number of wine importers. Apart from that there is another link between Bremen and wine: about 800 years ago, quality wines were produced here. A large number of food producing or trading companies are located in Bremen. It is also the home of Beck's beer and the SV Werder Bremen soccer team. As you can see there is a wide variety of industries where you could gain experience through an internship in Bremen.
