Newspaper Journalism Internship in Accra, Ghana

Description: This amazing project could be used as great experience for a budding scribe or a fresh direction for accomplished journalists. You would be welcomed whole-heartedly onto a quality English-language newspaper that keeps the Ghanaian people informed of national and international news. Working within a staff of 30, you will be involved in the research and writing of articles on environmental issues, economics, politics, or sport. Whatever your goals, where better to enjoy journalism?

What kind of skills you need to go on this type of placement:
You should be an undergraduate or graduate with some previous journalistic experience or qualifications and be prepared to be versatile and flexible. A copy of your CV & covering letter is required to apply for this placement. Interns need to develop an understanding of the Ghanaian culture and be able to adapt to their way of working.

Your role as an intern:
Depending on your experience and the needs of the project you may get involved in any of the following:
- Proof-reading
- Researching and writing news stories
- Sub editing stories
- Interviewing
- Analyzing news reports
- Writing feature articles
- Helping to edit materials for publication

Highlights: This placement is based at an English language newspaper in Accra. The majority of newspapers volunteers work at are left wing politically orientated, tackling issues such as human rights, the state of the national economy and assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the various political parties. Other newspapers volunteers work at are socially orientated covering entertainment news. The newspapers are privately owned, controlled and funded.
