Typical Duration of Program: 5-8 weeks
Description:
Would you like to come and work in India for a period of one to twelve months? We currently have several projects running, which need the help of international volunteers. We are looking for people who are willing to participate in a variety of different areas, from constructing reading rooms in village schools to teaching English, computers or health to Government school children, children of migrant workers, and at-risk youth.
Highlights:
As a volunteer, you will be working alongside Indian youth and other international volunteers helping to put projects into action. You will gain first hand experience of working in the field and helping to initiate change within a community. We are an NGO that works with marginalized communities to raise awareness about health and education issues. The method of working is cultural, educational and participatory in nature. We regularly use, theatre, puppetry, music and art. Our aim is to empower young people to initiate changes within their communities, and provide them with educational or employment opportunities. The current projects we are running at the moment are: Reading Rooms: Many government schools in India lack a lot of basic facilities. For example, many of the schools do not have libraries, and even if they do, the students do not have proper access to them. Therefore, this project aims not just at setting up libraries in government schools, but setting up a reading room with a variety of books from all over the world. The volunteers will be involved in building reading rooms in new schools, and also visiting existing reading rooms every week, to work alongside the children, encouraging and teaching them to read. English teaching: We are currently working in a number of government schools, as well as the Government Children's Home for Boys, assisting children in learning English, providing them with basic computer skills and playing games with them. Volunteers will be involved in continuing this program, and teaching in some schools. Healthy Body/Healthy Mind workshops: We have a program called Healthy Body/Healthy Mind in which our long-term interns create a series of workshops to teach government school and slum children the importance of proper health, nutrition and hygiene. Arts and Crafts/Sports workshops: Many of the children in Government schools do not have the opportunity to participate in extra curricular activities. Volunteers will conduct regular workshops in the schools which have a focus on arts, theatre and other creative activities, or sports and games. Hand Made Paper: We are keen to promote hand made paper products as an environmental and sustainable alternative to mill made paper. We have a range of high quality products, which we are marketing to people all over the world. Volunteers will be involved in promoting these products and developing our customer base.
