Description:
IVDN will be glad to introduce Pre-medical and Medical students to health institutions in rural western Kenya at the St. Joseph Mission's Hospital and Oruba Nursing and Maternity Home Ltd. These two institutions are located in rural western part of Kenya. The students will have an opportunity to rotate in medical specialities of their choice. IVDN medical program incorporates the students' knowledge of pharmacology, immunology, pathology, cytology etc. This knowledge is narrowed to a clinician's perspective as they passively participate in major(consultant's) ward rounds between 8am-11am. Students will also participate in community out-reach clinics in collaboration with the hospitals and the surrounding rural community. During the outreach programmes, the students are involved in giving health talks, junior clerkship for those interested, immunization of under 5 age group, distribution of deworming drugs and many other duties that would be tailored to meet the preclinical students curriculum requirements. Work is so varied and spread across many areas. The hospitals are very busy with a multitude of duties and responsibilities so students will be over-worked at times and in most areas. As a volunteer, you may be required to work in various departments including Surgery, ICU, Physiotherapy. X-ray and many others depending on your academic year programme. Most of the work will be to help and assist the local doctors and nurses with their day to day routine. Please visit our website and click on "Guide to Programmes" for more informaion on elective programme.
Highlights:
Elective term students will rotate through internal medicine, Surgery and special rotations that include ophthalmology, psychiatry & ENT. Students are at liberty to pick on particular specialties of interest to them. Pre-clinical students will find slots within the hospital's program where their knowledge of pharmacology, immunology, pathology, cytology, anatomy, physiology, clinical chemistry will be narrowed to a clinician's perspective.
