Junior Year in Munich

  Germany
  • Munich:
  • Munich (Munchen)

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring
Dates: September -July

Description: This program is America's oldest academic program in Germany, with 3500 alumni from 500 colleges and universities across the US. Students are enrolled at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) and have access to the full range of courses taught at the LMU; students may also study at the Technical University of Munich. Extensive information about studying at the University of Munich can be found on the JYM website. The program also provides language training and optional area studies courses taught at the JYM institute which is centrally located in the city's museum district. Students must have junior status and two years of college German. Only students from US or Canadian colleges or universities may apply. All instruction is in German. Full year and one semester options are available.

Junior Year in Munich

Highlights: The JYM program begins late-September with a language and culture orientation before classes begin in October. Students enroll in a combination of courses throughout the year: regular University of Munich courses for which JYM does not provide tutorials, University of Munich and/or Technical University of Munich courses, and JYM elective area studies courses taught at the JYM institute. All instruction is in German. The program has a full-time Resident Director on site in Munich, who also directs our Honors Program for the Study of European Ideas. Students live alongside their German counterparts in university student residences. A group flight is available for full-year students. JYM has its own scholarship funds and distributes USD 50,000 in scholarships annually. Optional European City Seminars are offered throughout the year depending on interest. Internships are available in a variety of fields, incl. a unique engineering internship program with ThyssenKrupp Steel (Jan-July). Our JYM Job Board helps JYM alumni find jobs after graduation where they can use their language and cross-cultural skills.

Degree Level: Bachelors Degree (Undergraduate)

Qualifications: Two years of college level German or the equivalent are required for admission to JYM (we look at the level, not the number of courses); students must have junior class ranking by the time of departure; open to students enrolled at accredited US or Canadian colleges and universities only.

Wayne State University's Mission Statement: We aim to integrate US undergraduates with studies in their major at Germany's premier university - LMU Munich. JYM offers semester, year-long, and internship programs. Undergraduate research projects are central to our Honors Program for the Study of European Ideas. JYM is an intercollegiate program open to US college students with 2 years of German. Because we have a single, focused mission, we are just the right size; not too small nor too big, and yet diverse (about 40 students from 30 schools nationwide participate in JYM each year). Students live alongside other LMU Munich students in university housing. We encourage students to view their study abroad experience in Munich as part of their overall career preparation, and we're the only program with its own Job Board for our alumni that lists current openings where German language skills and overseas experience are required.
