D.A.R.E. - Drug Education Program
New Zealand
Term: Throughout the year
Description:
D.A.R.E. - Drug Education Program This specialized internship is an opportunity for college students seeking an applied environment to further their studies in New Zealand's drug abuse resistance education programs. The country, like all nations of the world, faces significant drug and alcohol abuse problems among its youth. In response, D.A.R.E. New Zealand (with approval of D.A.R.E International) has developed six education programs. Some of these programs are delivered in partnership between the classroom teacher and trained Police Education Officers. These programs focus on developing skills in decision-making, assertiveness and handling peer pressure. 'Dare to make a choice' is designed for children aged between 8 and 12 years for a ten-week school term. 'Dare to make a change' is another program designed to have kids examine their own lives and to take responsibility for their behavior. The internship offers a suitably qualified college student the opportunity to witness the delivery of these vital programs. Here is a rare chance to accompany the Education Officers into the classroom and other settings to help equip and empower young people, with the knowledge and resources to resist the drug and alcohol pressures facing them. The internship is not a full-time one and must be partnered with another customized placement in perhaps the area of at-risk youth and young people.
