Lexia in Berlin

  Germany
  • Berlin:
  • Berlin

Term: Academic Year, Fall, Spring

Description: Lexia's academically challenging Semester and Academic Year Programs consist of four courses each semester: 1) Intensive Language (at beginning through advanced levels in German); 2) a Civilization Seminar on the host country, including excursions; 3) a Research Methods Seminar; and 4) an individualized Field Research Project (FRP). The FRP is an opportunity to design an independent study project which focuses directly on a subject area within a student's academic major or minor.

Highlights: The Lexia program in Berlin is affiliated with Die Neue Schule, a progressive language school, with additional instruction provided by the distinguished faculty of the Freie Universitat of Berlin and other institutions of higher learning. Lexia offers an in-depth academic opportunity to study Berlin, Germany, its history, arts, politics and culture, through a progressive curriculum of language, cultural and field study which blends theory and practice with classroom and field-based learning. Our programs clearly articulate how to actively engage another culture. Through the Field Research Project, Lexia can accommodate almost any major or field of interest at all overseas sites. With the exception of language classes, the primary language of instruction is English. Unpaid internships and volunteer work are offered as a supplement to the academic program.

Lexia also offers a Visual Culture Option in Berlin. Affiliated with the Atelierhaus Mengerzeille, an artists' cooperative founded in 1993, the Visual Culture Program is designed to help students grasp the significance of developments in contemporary art and architecture as artists respond to changes in the global economy, politics and society, as well as the arts' own traditions and trajectories. The program includes coursework in these areas:
-Art and Architecture, from Renaissance to the Future: Creating, Collecting, Exhibiting
-Visual Research Methods Seminar
-Visual Research Project/Internship
The Visual Culture Track will run parallel to Lexia in Berlin's German Civilization and Culture Program, providing students the opportunity to explore the resources of both programs.
