Global-Eyes London Parliamentary Internship
England
Term: Fall, Spring, Summer
Dates: enquire for specific date
Description:
As a Parliamentary Intern you will spend your session working within the House of Commons or House of Lords as a research assistant to a pre-appointed Member. Positions in other government offices or other sectors are a possibility but must be requested at least 1-month prior to the application deadline for your requested session. However, placements outside the House of Commons/Lords are not guaranteed. During the Spring and Fall sessions you will work 2-3 days per week if you are also on an academic semester or 4-5 days per week if you are not on an academic semester. We will arrange your work schedule around your academic schedule. During the summer session you will work 4-5 days per week. You will be working with matters relating to the Committees your Member sits on. You may also be dealing with national, constituency or international issues. You will be responsible for writing reports, researching and writing subject briefs, general correspondence, general office administration and possibly even writing speeches. Global-Eyes will seek a placement with a specific Member that is as appropriate as possible to your requests. You will be required to keep a daily work journal and cultural scrapbook of your experiences and you will be responsible for submitting edited excerpts of this journal three times throughout your session and the entire scrapbook at the end of your session. Positions within the UK government can sometimes be demanding and deadline driven and other times slow, repetitive and less challenging. Interns must be willing to work in both environments to the best of their ability.
Highlights:
Interns will be required to attend speaking engagements throughout the session. In the past sessions have included high ranking members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, Regional Offices and outside interest groups to name a few. Day trips are optional and in the past have included Bath, Stonehenge, Oxford, Leeds Castle and Windsor OR a Weekend in Paris. All trips include coach travel to and from London and entrance fee to main attractions. Interns will have the option of the type of housing they would prefer. Interns may select their own housing or can live in Global-Eyes housing. Residence Hall accommodation is only available for the summer session. Please note new dates and deadlines for the Parliamentary Internship.
