Description:
The Madrid Language and Liberal Arts Program and the Madrid Internship Program offer a semester or academic year of intensive language and cultural study in the lively and cosmopolitan city of Madrid, Spain. In addition to courses and/or an internship, the programs include day and weekend field trips to such places as Granada, Córdoba, Toledo, Sevilla, and/or Segovia. All courses are taught by Spanish faculty or the resident director. Upon successful completion of a semester, students earn 16 Boston University credits.
Highlights:
Level I Intensive Spanish Language Program
An intensive language and cultural immersion program held at the Instituto Internacional en Espanya. Academic options are available at various language levels, and courses are taught exclusively in Spanish.
Level II Advanced Studies and Internship Program
Level II offers students the opportunity to complement language study with liberal arts courses at the Instituto Internacional and by direct enrollment at the Universidad Autynoma de Madrid (UAM), a state university in the suburbs of Madrid. Students may choose from a wide variety of subjects, such as art history, cinema, economics, politics, psychology, and Spanish literature. Because of differences in the Spanish system, course work at the UAM is available only to academic-year and spring-semester students. All students should provide their academic advisor with the course offering information. Madrid II students will make final course selection in Madrid but should confirm in advance which courses must be taken for major, minor, and departmental requirements, and which courses may be taken for elective credit. Advanced students are offered a wide variety of courses through a consortium agreement with Middlebury College, New York University, the State University of New York, and Vassar/ Wesleyan/Colgate, which also have study abroad programs at the International Institute. All courses are taught in Spanish by Spanish scholars from nearby universities. When students arrive in Madrid, they select courses in consultation with the Boston University Resident Director. All courses meet three hours per week and normally require at least one paper and final exam. Boston University evaluates each course and awards credit for successful completion.
Level III Honors Program
Spring semester only
Level III offers a specialized program for exceptionally well-qualified students who have a strong command of Spanish and have a GPA of at least 3.5. Students enroll directly in course work at the Universidad Autynoma de Madrid (UAM). Prior to the start of courses at UAM, students in Level III enroll in an advanced-level course on contemporary Spain. Program participants choose three courses from a wide array of subjects offered at the university and participate in semester-long tutorials that assist them with their university course work.
