INSTEP London Internship Program

Description: Spend a summer in London studying political science, law, and international politics. While studying in London you could also intern in politics, law, business, or communications. The INSTEP London program is designed to integrate the study of these disciplines and to combine internship experience with specially related coursework. During the summer, you must register for six credits which allows you to choose between registering for two seminars or one seminar and an internship. Either way, you will receive six credits after successfully completing the summer program. During the semester, you must register for 15 credits which allows you to choose between registering for five seminars or three seminars and an internship.

Highlights: Internships are available in the fields of politics, law, business, and communications. If you decide to intern, you will enroll for the internship as well as one of the above seminars. You will be expected to work a maximum of 20 hours per week as well as keep up with your coursework so you should prepare for a considerable time commitment. Recent internships that have been completed in London include placements with political think tanks, lobbying groups, in solicitors' offices, and in the headquarters of the major political parties.

Qualifications / Skills Needed: To be accepted as an intern, you should have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 with a major in a politics, law, business, or communications/media (or related field) and a major GPA of 3.2 or higher. You must complete an Application for Admission including an Internship Proposal Form and submit an up to date resume. In order for your internship proposal to be considered these must be submitted at least 8 weeks prior to the beginning of the program for which you are applying. Internships are a major component of the INSTEP London program; however if you are not accepted as an intern, you may still have the opportunity to participate in the program by registering for courses only.

INSTEP's Mission Statement: The Institute of Economic and Political Studies (INSTEP) is an independent organization established in 1979 on the principle that North American undergraduates could benefit from an intensive, individualized semester study abroad experience featuring a scholarly, European perspective on economics, politics, law and international relations. The Institute of Economic and Political Studies (INSTEP) is characterized by a distinguished teaching faculty who provide a challenging educational environment for a small number of students. Students may also participate in an internship experience to round out the professional aspect of the social science or humanities degree. This combination of course options and internship opportunities has appealed to some 4,000 participants from many prestigious North American institutions since the program's inception. INSTEP has dedicated offices and program staff in London and Cambridge and guarantees student housing in both centers as well as access to libraries and computing facilities.
